Shortly after the save the SHSAT forum at the Flushing Library on 6/22, CoalitionEdu members met with State Senator Tony Avella to discuss his co-sponsorship of the bill to eliminate the SHSAT as the sole criterion.

After listening to our concerns and considering our positions we were happy to hear that he reversed his position and withdrew his co-sponsorship of the bill. Furthermore, he has offered to do what he can to support our opposition towards the bill.

Senator Avella is currently facing John Liu in a Democratic Primary in September. John Liu has already stated many times that he is supporting the bill to eliminate the SHSAT as the sole criterion. If you want to keep the exam for the Specialized High School as is, you will support Tony Avella.

Senator Avella’s position on the bill is important to us as he is a member of the Senate Education Committee that will review the bill and ultimately his vote may be the decisive one in stopping the change.

This Sunday July 20th at 2PM Senator Avella is having a campaign rally at the Flushing Taiwan Center       137-44 Northern Boulevard Flushing, NY 11354.

Please come to show our support for his endorsement to keep the SHSAT and show how important this issue is to the residents of Queens and all of New York City.

As we mentioned at the forum, To Be Empowered We Must VOTE.
